Where did we come from? Where are we? Where are we going? Three women – Matylda, Patricie and Jana –  present the case history of the land of Czechia. These intellectuals residing in a peculiar confinement offer the people their interpretation of the present. They ask about how to capture Czechness, about the Czechs´ place in Europe, about the way Czech society has become emancipated. One of the inspirations of this bitter lament is the Luxemburg writer Manderscheid´s experience on his visit to Prague, a city which no longer exists. The country is in civil upheaval, the sense of desolation only deepened by the refugees in Bělá. These women, along with the rest of the Czech elite, think they are working for their homeland. Something fundamental about their own nature, however, escapes them.
